A fire recently broke out at the Grand Laguna Hotel — also known as the “abandoned ship hotel” — a popular photo spot in Koh Chang, Thailand.
Firefighters were reportedly unable to extinguish the blaze due to strong winds.
They estimate the fire would take three days to consume the entire structure.
The Nation Thailand reported that the fire broke out in the building on Tuesday (3 Dec) morning.
According to local police, the fire started at about 11.50am and spread quickly with the aid of strong winds.
Firefighters could not stop the fire from spreading despite their best efforts.
As of Wednesday (4 Dec), the blaze has engulfed half of the building.
Police said the fire started at the rear of the hotel and quickly spread to the front. They asked the Koh Chang district chief for backup, and the authorities mobilised about 50 firefighters to help control the fire.
Despite the firefighters’ best efforts to put out the fire, the fire quickly spread from the first floor to the fifth floor, eventually engulfing the entire building.
Firefighters and officials from the Mu Koh Chang National Marine Park attribute the fire’s rapid spread to the building’s wooden structure and the strong sea winds.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
There are many theories as to why the Grand Laguna Hotel became the “abandoned ghost ship”.
Some suggest that the owners ran out of funds to maintain the large resort or failed to complete the necessary paperwork, forcing them to abandon it.
Others believe the hotel’s closure is connected to several alleged deaths on the property, including the accidental fall of a Russian tourist from the ship’s top floor, which likely fueled the haunted rumours.
