Flash flood along Bukit Timah Road subsided after 10 minutes, says PUB

On Saturday (16 Nov), Singapore experienced a sudden heavy downpour that caused flood risk warnings to be issued across the island.

One of the locations affected was Bukit Timah Road, where a flash flood occurred.

Flash flood in Bukit Timah subsided at 3.30pm: PUB

In a Facebook post on Saturday afternoon, national water agency PUB said the flash flood along Bukit Timah Road was located near King Albert Park MRT station.

It developed at around 3.20pm “due to high water levels in the adjacent drains and Bukit Timah Canal”, PUB added.

A PUB Quick Response Team was deployed to direct traffic away from floodwaters before the flash flood subsided at 3.30pm.

Flash floods in Bukit Timah also took place on 14 Oct

The area is known for flooding. It previously experienced flooding about a month ago on 14 Oct, also due to heavy rain.

PUB said works are ongoing to widen and deepen a 900m stretch of Bukit Timah Canal from Rifle Range Road to Jalan Kampong Chantek.

This would be a long-term measure to enhance flood protection in the area and will be completed by 2026.

PUB issued 10 flood risk warnings on 16 Nov

On Saturday, PUB issued flood risk warnings for 10 locations across the island due to the heavy rainfall.

According to the PUB Flood Alerts Telegram channel, members of the public were alerted to avoid Bukit Timah Road towards Clementi Road due to flash floods.

Other areas it warned against included a slip road on the Kranji Expressway towards Woodlands Road, Jalan Boon Lay, the Punggol West Flyover of the Tampines Expressway, and two junctions of Sunset Drive (with Sunset Terrace and Sunset Way Road).

108.4mm of rain fell in northwestern S’pore over less than 2 hours

According to PUB, the heaviest rainfall recorded on Saturday was a total of 108.4mm in northwestern Singapore over less than two hours — from 2.10pm to 4pm.

“This amount corresponds to 43% of Singapore’s average monthly rainfall in November,” PUB said.

It also lies within the top 3% of maximum daily rainfall records since 1978.
