It may now get easier as a pop-up library featuring both Garfield and Mr Kiasu has opened at The Centrepoint.

Besides posing for photos with the characters, there are also about 120 comic books to peruse.

Garfield x Mr Kiasu Pop-Up Library opened on 23 Oct

In a media release on Monday (23 Oct), the National Library Board (NLB) said the Garfield x Mr Kiasu Pop-Up Library opened that day.

Located at Level 1 of The Centrepoint (#01-33K), it will run till March 2024.

It’s the NLB’s first-ever character-themed pop-up library, and the first time the beloved characters from Singapore and the United States (US) are appearing together in a project.

The library is a collaboration between Mr Kiasu’s co-creator Mr Johnny Lau, Garfield’s rights owner Paramount Global, and Frasers Property Singapore, which operates the mall.

Library has mural depicting Garfield & Mr Kiasu as friends

Laid out over 614 square feet of space, the pop-up library is designed to represent an HDB flat — namely, Mr Kiasu’s home.

On one wall is a mural with an artwork conceptualised by Mr Lau that was exclusively commissioned for the library.

It depicts the friendship between Garfield and Mr Kiasu, who invites the feline to Singapore to try laksa.

Obviously, this also makes the library a great spot for Insta-worthy photos. In a nod to that, there’s an Instagram wall with a standee of Mr Kiasu with Garfield.

There’s also a life-sized Garfield plushie for people to pose with.

Better still, Garfield himself will pay a visit to the library “sometime in the coming weeks”, said NLB, So those who want to catch him should pay attention to their social media accounts.

About 120 physical comic books to browse

Of course, a library isn’t a library without its books.

The Garfield x Mr Kiasu Pop-Up Library thus has a curated collection of around 120 physical Mr Kiasu and Garfield comic books for visitors to browse on-site.

They’re donated by Mr Lau and the Global Publishing arm of Paramount.

Though the physical books can’t be borrowed, there are a variety of e-titles that can be borrowed. Popular Garfield comic strips are also screened and looped on-site.

Those who don’t want to read comics can also borrow e-titles on topics like cooking, leisure, and wellness.

All one has to do is scan QR codes found on wall features at the library.
