On Friday (1 Nov), a gas leak was detected at a construction site in Tanjong Plaza, causing about 60 people to be evacuated.
Photos of the incident shared on Facebook shared by eyewitness Song Seng Wun showed Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) vehicles outside Tanjong Pagar Plaza, a two-storey mall below an HDB block.
They also showed SCDF officers at the scene.
Saying that a gas leak occurred on Friday evening, Mr Song said he was unsure if it was caused by ongoing construction works.
He also shared a photo of a sign stating that gas pipeline works were in progress at the mall.
The 64-year-old economist told Shin Min Daily News that shops in the area had to close temporarily.
In response to queries from MS News, SCDF confirmed that it was alerted to a gas leak at about 4.25pm on 1 Nov.
When SCDF arrived at 1 Tanjong Pagar Plaza, the gas leak was detected at a construction area at the side of the building.
SCDF used a water jet to disperse the gas, while the leak was “mitigated by gas technicians at the construction area”.
As a precautionary measure, about 60 people were evacuated from the building and the affected construction area, SCDF said.
This included staff and children at two childcare centres on the second floor, according to Shin Min.
An employee of one of them, Mulberry Learning Centre, said teachers immediately brought their children downstairs, with no time to retrieve their belongings.
No injuries were reported.
