Popular Mandopop singer G.E.M. – whose real name is Deng Ziqi – is known in the entertainment industry as the girl with “giant lungs” because of her vocal prowess.
Strong vocals aren’t all that she should be known for, it seems, for she’s got a big heart too.
On Sunday (2 Feb), the singer released a heartwarming song titled Angels, dedicated to the medical workers fighting against the coronavirus on the frontline.
The music video highlights various kind acts and sacrifices of these workers, dubbed “angels” by G.E.M, as well as others who’ve sacrificed their own time to help others.
You can watch the video here.
If you’re looking to sing along, here are the lyrics, as seen on Genius. We’ve also translated it to English at the bottom, so you can understand it better.
Don’t be afraid of long, dark nights
Look up at the stars, they are forming a constellation now
Perhaps it’s a test
To see if scattered hearts can stand side-by-side
When you pray for a miracle
Do you believe that the answer is you?
You are the most ordinary, yet warmest angel
In this storm, it’s fortunate to have your perseverance
Your teary smile will bring us a rainbow after the rain one day
Because the world has you, we feel touched despite the pain
How many bumps along the road
How many heavy storms that we’ve gone through
Even though we might get scared and feel sad
We’re in the same boat, there’s no need to retreat
When you pray for a miracle
Do you believe that the answer is you?
You are the most ordinary, yet warmest angel
In this storm, it’s fortunate to have your perseverance
Your teary smile will bring us a rainbow after the rain one day
Because the world has you, we feel touched despite the pain
In the description of the video, she shared that the touching story of the man who dropped a box of 500 masks at a police station was part of her inspiration for writing the song.
The man’s act of running away without wanting to claim credit for the masks really touched her.
Later, she saw several other heartwarming reports of other “angels” who’re contributing in their own way.

She emphasised that a little kindness goes a long way, especially if everyone contributes.
“Perhaps you might feel like you can’t do much for the overall situation, but you do not know how much warmth you bring to this world with what you see as ‘not enough'”, she said.

We may not know these angels’ names, but we’re extremely thankful for their kind deeds.
Needless to say, netizens were touched by G.E.M.’s surprise gift:
Many also cheered on Wuhan and the numerous medical staff working round the clock.

They also offered their own tributes to the staff.
“If saving people is a medical worker’s responsibility, then protecting them is everyone’s duty. It’s been hard for all of them, they deserve our respect.”

Regardless of where we live, our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who are affected by the coronavirus.
G.E.M reminds us that we can be the change that we are looking for, as shown in the lyrics of “Angels”:
When you pray for a miracle, do you believe that the answer is you?
Indeed, one small act of kindness can spark off a chain reaction to make the world a better place, and it can start from us.
Let’s all do what we can for others, even if it’s just for 1 person.
