Woman says GetGo ‘not helpful’ after cards go missing, company says PDPA restricts them from sharing customer details

Woman says that GetGo was ‘not helpful’ after cards went missing in car

In a Facebook post on Monday (14 Oct), a netizen pleaded for the return of her NRIC and credit cards after they went missing from her wallet.

Facebook user Pauline Poon stated in her post that she left her wallet in a rented GetGo car on Saturday (12 Oct) evening.

However, when she returned to the car rental company the next day, she discovered that her cards had been taken from her wallet.

Upon discovering that only one other party had rented the same car after her, Ms Poon contacted the company to assist her in recovering her lost items.

However, she said that GetGo was “not helpful”, adding that the company could not contact the other renter on their behalf.

In a reply to a Facebook comment, Poon claimed that the car rental company said that the matter was “beyond their responsibility”.

GetGo cannot divulge passengers’ information due to PDPA

In response to MS News‘ queries, a GetGo spokesperson explained that Ms Poon had requested that the company share the next renter’s contact details directly with her.

“We had to inform them that we were unable to share any of our customers’ details directly with another user due to the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA),” the spokesperson said.

They also shared that they have reached out to the next user “internally” for more information on the missing items.

Additionally, the car rental company urged Ms Poon to lodge a police report about the matter.

“Once the police investigation commences, we’ll receive an official order for information, which permits us to share the necessary information with the police,” they explained.

The spokesperson also reaffirmed that the company will “do everything” in their capacity to support users, but only within their “permitted legal boundaries”.

“We remain ready to support the user and assist with any further investigation with the police.”

Under the Personal Data Protection Act 2012, it is illegal for companies to grant unauthorised access to personal data.
