The Singaporean downtempo electronica duo .gif (that’s pronounced “dot jif”) have just released a wistful music video for their lead single ‘Godspeed’ from their imminent debut Soma.
The band pays tribute to a late 90’s Singaporean film — Eating Air – with the song imagining a continuation of the film’s denouement.
The film is described as a “a motorcycle kung-fu love story”, carrying themes of displaced ambition and entrapment.
Meanwhile, the music video envisions the life of protagonist Boy and his once vivacious and audacious best friend Ah Gu going for a night ride on a motorcycle.
However, as told in the lyrics — “Brother, you were the best of us and it should have been me/ And you’ve never been heavier on the pillion seat” — Ah Gu has lost his willful spirit, finally hampered by reality.
Directed by playwright Christopher Fok and Cashew Chemists bassist Elliot Sng, this music video is all about the nostalgia with vintage bikes, Dakota Crescent, and cruising across Singaporean landscapes — rightfully capturing the essence of .gif’s rather atmospheric track.
What else has this music video shown us?
It has shown us what it’s like to be alone on the road at night, in this country we call home.
With the almost-empty roads and bright city lights, night rides seem really peaceful, don’t they? (or at least that’s how it’s been depicted in the video). And this video has definitely shed light to show how Singapore looked like at night back then, who knew our country could be this scenic huh?
One thing’s for sure, the videography was definitely on point.
