Hong Kong girl group slammed for out-of-tune debut, admits to inexperience

A new Hong Kong girl group has faced a challenging start in the entertainment industry following criticism of its debut performance, which was marred by pitch issues.

HK girl group goes out of tune at 5 Oct debut

The four-member group, named UNi, held its debut media event on 5 Oct at a mall in Hong Kong’s Tsim Sha Tsui, according to a YouTube video of the event.

While the young ladies certainly looked the part, their performance of their song ‘Now’ left much to be desired.

During the performance, each member took turns singing solo, but their voices faltered, often sounding shaky.

It was no better when they sang in unison.

When singing together, they struggled to harmonise, resulting in jarring moments as they fell out of sync.

The lacklustre singing wasn’t the only issue that drew criticism — UNi’s dance choreography also appeared uncoordinated.

The members struggled to keep up with one another, leading to noticeable timing issues throughout their routine.

While their enthusiasm couldn’t be faulted, there were times when members seemed unsure of what they were supposed to be doing at any given point of time in the performance.

Netizens slam girl group for out-of-tune performance

The next day, a short clip of their off-key performance was posted on Threads, with the user savagely saying: “I can’t be the only one who had to listen to this.”

They added that they didn’t know whether any mall employees had their eardrums damaged.

Noting that the group was self-funded, they cruelly said:

Why not self-fund your singing and dancing lessons first… no wonder you need to self-fund.

Apparently, the group had five members but one left, though “nothing changed”, the user lamented.

The post has already gained 14,000 shares and 3,800 likes.

Taiwanese netizens leave scathing comments

Worse was to come for UNi when Taiwan news outlet SETN picked up the news and posted a clip of the group’s performance on Facebook.

The post, which has been viewed 4.1 million times, was captioned: “I left after listening to this for three seconds!… Netizens call it ‘disaster-level singing’.”

The comments on the post were scathing.

One netizen said: “It’s good to have confidence, but please just sing at home.”

Another suggested that the police should play this 24 hours non-stop and any suspect would confess to their crime.

Someone, however, defended the girls by saying that the sound system wasn’t tuned properly and the microphones weren’t of good quality.

UNi members address poor performance

Since the controversy erupted, at least two members of UNi have spoken up to address it.

Szeching, the captain of the group, posted on Instagram on 8 Oct, admitting that she didn’t perform to the best of her abilities and “made mistakes”.

As it was the group’s first stage performance, they were nervous and “lost control of the rhythm”, she said.

Also, they couldn’t hear their own voices, she added. Lastly, she blamed inexperience for the unsatisfactory performance.

As the group is self-funded, they have to do everything themselves, including stage design, sound and choreography, she pointed out.

Though she has “many regrets” about the performance, she has learnt a lot, too, and this experience is an important learning opportunity for her and the team.

Another member, Yammi, also admitted on Instagram that the performance was “really bad”.

She suggested that their shortcomings were because they were self-funded, and as such had to learn a lot of things by themselves as they go along.

Assuring netizens that all of them were going to step up their practices to improve their performances, she said:

I hope you will give us a chance.

She thanked netizens for their support, adding that they were “happy that so many people are paying attention” to their progress.
