Outgoing president Halimah Yacob celebrates her 69th birthday on Wednesday (23 Aug), and she made a Facebook post thanking everyone for their well wishes.
Mdm Halimah also said that it is a “huge blessing” to have lived for so long.
She is also thankful that she has been given the chance to serve Singaporeans.
Incidentally, both Mdm Halimah and her husband, Mohammed Abdullah Alhabshee, are 69 this year, and were both born in August.
Today, Mdm Halimah turned 69 years old, she said in a Facebook post.
She also noted that her husband turned 69 on 9 Aug, which happens to be National Day.
“To have lived so long and to have been given the chance to serve our people is such a huge blessing,” Mdm Halimah said.
She thanks everyone for their well wishes and expressions of love and comfort.
Earlier, Mdm Halimah chose not to seek reelection after serving six years as president since 2017. Before becoming the president, Mdm Halimah was the Speaker of Parliament.
Though she lived in the Istana during her presidency, Mdm Halimah had expressed her wish to stay in her Yishun jumbo flat for a time.
She hasn’t confirmed if she’ll move back to the flat when her term ends, but she is definitely “retiring”.
According to The Straits Times (ST), Mdm Halimah plans to spend more time with her two grandchildren.
She will also continue to champion causes that are close to her heart.
One of the things she was vocal about during her presidential term was caning men who are aged above 50 for sexual crimes like rape.
MS News wishes Mdm Halimah a happy 69th birthday and hopes that she’ll continue to live a long and healthy life.
