To usher in the Year of the Rat, red packet designs this year have gone a little off tangent to feature the rat’s furrier & arguably more adorable cousin — the wee lil’ hamster.
Whichever rodent tickles your fancy, Ang Mo Kio Hub‘s playing host to a festive pasar malam just in time for the Lunar New Year and cheap angbaos were spotted by an MS News reader.
Here’s what’s in store if you do decide to head down to scrummage for some unique designs.
Snacking on pumpkin seeds is a treasured CNY tradition, so your nieces and nephews will definitely fawn over this grey and white striped hamster holding its prized seed adorably.
Pick from pairs of hamsters huddled up closely with each other, clutching lucky gold coins or tangerines in festive greetings.
All these designs are going for 4 packets for $2.
We also absolutely love this angular God of Fortune hamster, fronting this set of red packets with a toothy smile.
This hamster red packet design retails for $1 per pack.
Of course, there are more traditional Year of the Rat designs too, with 7 packs sold for $10.
We’d like to draw your attention to the traditional floral motifs on the chubby bottoms of the rat characters.
Paired with faint gold wave patterns on a red backdrop, they’d make a great signature angbao to give out this Lunar New Year.
If you’re feeling generous, you can even consider this intricate hidden gold mouse packet at a steeper price of $5.80 per pack. Reserved for the boss’ children perhaps?
Where there are mice, there’ll surely be cats in hot pursuit. And there’s no other cat more popular than the OG Hello Kitty.
Do look out for crowd-pleasers like these Sanrio packets in My Melody pink or Hello Kitty gold & orange packets, going for $1.50 per pack of 3.
Chatting with the vendors, MS News understands that the CNY pasar malam at Ang Mo Kio hub will last till the actual Lunar New Year rolls around.
You can also consider heading down anytime soon to purchase your red packets or CNY decorations — couplets, giant paper pineapples, ‘Fu’ decals & free samples of traditional new year snacks were spotted.
Simply take a short walk from Ang Mo Kio MRT station towards the tentages lined up in the centre of the street.
Do you prefer the hamster angbao designs or the floral rat packets? We’d love to hear what’s your go-to red packet design in the comments below.
