The newsstand boasts an illustrious history spanning three generations.

According to the owner, 49-year-old Periathambi Senthilmurugan aka Sam, he made the decision to close as he was instructed to downsize his display area.

Following the announcement, numerous netizens have taken to sharing cherished memories of the establishment.

Owner was told to downsize magazine display area

Speaking to Channel NewsAsia (CNA) Lifestyle, Mr Sam emphasised that his decision to close Thambi Magazine Store was not driven by increased overheads.

He further clarified that despite the availability of a plethora of online reading materials, print magazines still hold appeal for many.

Instead, Mr Sam disclosed that someone had instructed him to reduce his magazine display area by half.

He did not reveal who this person was or the reason for their request.

In any case, this instruction did not sit well with him as he feared it could diminish foot traffic to his store.

A unique aspect of the shop’s offerings is its unwrapped books, allowing customers to browse before making a purchase.

Mr Sam now hopes to find another area in Holland Village that will allow him to continue displaying his magazines.

He will also continue to sell newspapers at a makeshift stand near the store.

Customers share fond memories of magazine store

Following the announcement, numerous netizens took to social media to reminisce about their cherished moments at the iconic newsstand.

One Reddit user mentioned that “nothing else in Holland Village is as iconic as this store” and that they would miss it badly.
