Condensation from air-conditioning (AC) units has become the subject of some controversy in India.
Seeing liquid dripping from the statue of a deity, many devotees believed that it was some sort of holy water.
Authorities from the temple, where the statue is located, have since clarified that the water is merely condensation from one of their AC units.
According to Times of India, devotees have been lining up for water dripping from an elephant-shaped sculpture at Banke Bihari Temple — located in Uttar Pradesh, India.
Devotee reportedly believed that it was sacred water from the feet of Lord Krishna.
Footage circulating on social media showed devotees queueing up to collect the water trickling from the sculpture before drinking or sprinkling it on their heads.
Some even brought cups to collect the supposedly holy water.
Authorities from Banke Bihari Temple have since clarified that the water was condensation from air-conditioning units.
Condensation from the AC units would run through tubes integrated into the temple’s infrastructure before being discharged via the elephant-shaped spouts.
Many devotees were understandably disappointed by the revelation. Some even called for action to be taken against the temple, citing the lack of information about the water’s source.
Amid the controversy, an X user who goes by TheLiver Doc advised people against drinking AC water:
Cooling and air conditioning systems are breeding grounds for many types of infections including fungus, some really hellish.
