He intended on having a supper date with his girlfriend but off-duty policeman Muhammad Fareez wasn’t prepared to allow a crime take place before his eyes.
The Staff Sergeant’s (SSGT) from the Singapore Police Force crime-preventing skills were put to the test when he went to fetch his girlfriend, paramedic Nurul Fatin from Yishun Fire Station at 11:30pm. As they were about to depart from the station, they heard a ruckus near the entrance of the fire station.
What caught their attention next was a group of men taking off, leaving behind a man who had a head wound and was limping.
With Ms Fatin’s background as a paramedic, her first instinct was to provide first aid to the injured man. The man then informed Mr Fareez that he was assaulted by the unknown group of men that took off.
Without much hesitation, the officer from the Bukit Timah Neighbourhood Police Centre gave chase on his motorcycle. Realising that he was outnumbered, the 27-year-old sought the help of Sergeant (SGT) Muhammad Khairi, a firefighter from a nearby fire station.
With no time to waste, the two men hopped on Mr Fareez’s bike and pursued the group of men, eventually identifying two of the suspects along the main road of Yishun Ave 2.
In a perfect demonstration of teamwork, SGT Khairi alighted from the bike and went after the suspects on foot. While that happened, SSGT Fareez performed a U-turn to obstruct them, with their efforts seeing both suspects detained finally.
We can only imagine the collective gasps of breath by the crowd gathered to admire their heroics.
The trio’s heroic feats have seen them praised by the Singapore Police Force in a Facebook post on 25 Nov.
The post has gone on to garner 8,000 likes and was shared over 1,200 times. Those numbers prove that Singaporeans valued their efforts which is only natural given the risks involved in such situations.
Singaporeans should also be proud that they have such exemplary officers who are willing to go beyond the call of duty to help someone. Forget Batman and Superman, these guys are the real everyday heroes that keep our nation safe so that you and me can sleep peacefully.
We hear Jack Neo is preparing a new series of movies based on the trio.
