A 61-year-old homeless man in New Taipei City, Taiwan, was arrested for stealing, abusing, and killing a dog before discarding its body in a river.
The dog, a black mixed-breed named Michael, was tied to a boat at Fisherman’s Wharf in Tamsui District when it was stolen by a man surnamed Hu (surname transliterated from Chinese) on 19 Aug.
Hu was then brought the dog, while still tied to a leash, to a park in Zhongshan District, where he abused the animal.

The dog’s owner had posted a notice offering a reward of NT$10,000 (S$420) for information about the missing canine.
After receiving the report of the missing dog, the police began their investigation and identified Hu as the primary suspect.
Surveillance footage later confirmed that Hu had stolen the dog by forcefully pulling on its leash.

He then rode approximately 23km to the park in Zhongshan District, where he abused the dog, reports Taiwan’s ETtoday.
A couple allegedly heard wailing sounds from the park, but when police officers arrived, there were no traces of the animal.
Police officers eventually located and confronted Hu, who confessed to stealing and abusing the dog. He also admitted to discarding Michael’s lifeless body into the Keelung River afterwards.
Hu currently faces charges for theft, destruction of property, and violations against the Animal Protection Act.
