67-year-old man stabbed in the eye by neighbour in Hougang, nearly goes blind

67-year-old man stabbed in eye during dispute with neighbour

A 67-year-old man was stabbed in his right eye with a metal pole during a dispute with his neighbour in Hougang, resulting in a serious eye injury that nearly left him blind.

The victim suffered a conjunctival tear to his right eye and required two surgeries to retain his vision.

Fortunately, the surgeries were successful, but he continues to experience discomfort and occasional discharge in the affected eye.

The perpetrator, an 81-year-old man, was sentenced to seven weeks in jail after pleading guilty on Friday (6 Dec).

Neighbourhood conflict escalates to violence

According to Shin Min Daily News, the two men were already on hostile terms prior to the incident.

The victim, who has a habit of smoking outside his home, had been reported by the perpetrator for this behaviour, leading to a breakdown in their relationship.

In April last year, the perpetrator, holding a metal pole, confronted the victim in the corridor of their block.

The perpetrator claimed that he heard the victim shouting vulgarities the previous week while walking past his unit.

Offended, the perpetrator confronted the victim, accusing him of directing the insults at him and his mother.

When the victim denied the accusation, the perpetrator, in a fit of anger, stabbed him in the right eye with the metal pole.

Needs 2 surgeries to preserve vision

After the attack, the victim was rushed to Changi General Hospital, where it was found that the injury had caused a tear in his conjunctiva, severely impairing his vision in the right eye.

He underwent two surgeries, including the implantation of an intraocular lens, to preserve his eyesight.

During his recovery, he also developed a high fever, which further complicated his healing process.

In total, the victim took about a month off work due to the injury.

The victim works as a part-time driver for a construction company during the day and as a karang guni man at night.

His month-long recovery caused him to lose thousands of dollars in income.

While the surgeries have helped to maintain his vision, he continues to experience occasional tearing, dryness, and discomfort in the injured eye.

Despite this, the victim has no plans to seek further medical compensation and prefers to move on from the incident, stating he just wants to put it behind him.
