New Huawei Lab In Changi Will Train Budding Nanyang Polytechnic Students In Artificial Intelligence

Huawei’s New AI Lab In Changi Will Train Nanyang Polytechnic Students

Jobs relating to computer science, and in particular artificial intelligence (AI), are among the most sought-after ones in the market today.

On Friday (22 Nov), Chinese technology behemoth Huawei opened its new AI lab in Changi Business Park, reported The Straits Times.

According to The Straits Times, there are plans to train up to 100 AI architects and 1,000 developers by 2023 using the new facility.

Huawei will also be working with Nanyang Polytechnic to “explore various talent cultivation programmes”.

The move will benefit all stakeholders

Mr Nicholas Ma, chief executive of Huawei International, said the move is beneficial for both Huawei and Singaporean talents. This is because the current demand for AI technology talents far exceeds the supply:

Whenever I attend a tech summit in Singapore, people are asking me about getting more talent here.

Huawei to work with Nanyang Polytechnic

Huawei has set its sights on tech talents here in Singapore too. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed with Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP). They will look into “talent cultivation programmes” in areas like AI, 5G and cloud technology.

NYP isn’t Huawei’s first venture in Singapore.

ST reported that earlier this week, Huawei, together with CapitaLand Singapore and Business China, put pen to paper on an internship programme that will allow university students in Singapore to take up internships in China.

Mr Ma shared that their new move of accelerating the “tech ecosystem” was “something different” from the workshops and courses that they commonly organised in the past.

AI lab boasts 5G capabilities

Huawei’s new AI lab reportedly cost S$13.6 million to build.

Huawei’s AI lab in Singapore also boasts 5G capabilities allowing users to experiment on “5G applications and scenarios”.

Boost for Singapore tech sector

We hope that the new lab will benefit Singapore and will allow new aspects of technology to be explored.

As Singapore aims to achieve its vision of becoming a Smart Nation, we hope that Huawei’s AI lab will be a catalyst for budding tech talents to achieve their dreams.
