Mala fans may swear by Lao Gan Ma chilli sauce. But others who prefer Vietnamese or Thai cuisine have another go-to hot sauce — Huy Fong Sriracha Hot Chilli Sauce.
However, if you’ve just purchased a fresh bottle of this chilli sauce, you may want to read this.
On Friday (27 Dec), Singapore Food Agency (SFA) issued a recall of the popular chilli sauce over fears of it exploding upon opening. Yup, you heard that right. Explode as in KABOOM.
They announced the recall through a Facebook post.
In a press release, SFA announced that the affected products had an expiration date of Mar 2021. They originate from the US and have a packing size of 17 and 28oz.
Here are the full details of the affected batch.
The affected batches of Huy Fong Sriracha Hot Chilli Sauce were first recalled in Australia. According to the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) the product may have lactic acid build-up.
Hence, some bottles may bloat and continue to ferment, producing carbon dioxide gas in the process.
As expected, the build-up pressure may lead some bottles to explode upon opening, akin to a shaken bottle of Coke.
Since the products were also imported in Singapore, SFA has contacted the importer – TC Import & Export Pte Ltd – to recall the product. The recall process is currently ongoing.
Customers who bought the product may also contact their point of purchase for enquiries, refund, or exchange of the product.
If you know family or friends who are fans of Huy Fong Sriracha Hot Chilli Sauce, better urge them to check their batches of the condiment.
While only 1 batch of the sauce appears to be affected, it’s better to be safe than sorry. After all, nobody wants hot sauce exploding all over them.
