Pushcart ice cream is so quintessentially Singaporean, you can even find it on Orchard Road.
Lots of people love hopping down to their void decks to get a block of ripple on bread or a cup of mint chocolate chip ice cream after dinner. It’s easy, affordable and a great pick-me-up.
Well, this netizen got an extra pick-me-up, in the form of an ice cream uncle with principles.
He shared about his experience in a Facebook post that’s gotten over 1,000 shares in less than a day.
In the post, the netizen related how he was impressed by the uncle’s work ethic as he refused to keep the change for his ice cream.
I actually wanted him to keep the change yet he chase after me telling me to take back the change.
The ice cream uncle apparently told the netizen to visit him more often instead of letting him keep the change — so he could continue making an honest living.
This 72-year-old ice cream seller clearly has a strong set of moral principles, and this netizen wanted to give him some support by posting about his stall online.
In response, netizens left kind comments commending the uncle.
Some who had also met him shared their personal experiences. From what they’ve said, he sounds like a humble old man with a beautiful soul.
Apparently, he’s always smiling and cheerful to his neighbours.
Apparently, he has a soft spot for children too, and gives them extra treats when they buy ice cream from him.
Even though this uncle is getting on in years, he’s not letting age hold him back from working hard and earning an honest living.
It’s wonderful that we have many elderly business owners here. They’re experienced and know their trade, and they have that special kampung spirit of old that’s an additional treat for their customers.
There’s lots of activities to enjoy in Singapore nowadays, but it’s always great to go back to the basics, and why not support the elderly while you’re at it? There are lots of other honest old business owners out there who need our support too.
Next time you want a treat, maybe you could pay your local ice cream push cart, coffee shop or hawker centre a visit instead of Starbucks or 7-Eleven.
You can find this particular uncle around Block 674, Jurong West Street 65, or near Boon Lay Secondary School every day from 2pm-10pm.
While you’re there, and wish him well for us!
