In tropical regions like Southeast Asia, we typically do not experience any drastically cold weather.

Hence, a rare occurrence like hail is almost an out of the world experience for many residing here.

Ipoh hit with hail storm

In this video posted by Sky Malaysia yesterday morning (20 May), it looks like a typical rainy day in Ipoh — dark clouds, rain sounds, nothing out of the norm.

However, as the netizen zooms in at around 45 seconds into the video, we observe these ice substances on the ground.

Other Ipoh residents also recorded this rare sighting, showing a clearer view of the hail falling on hard tarmac road.

“Winter is coming” takes on a different meaning in Ipoh, especially for this netizen’s daughter, evidently elated about this winter-like episode.

As seen in this Twitter post, Malaysians were warning each other to stay inside as much as possible during this icy rain.

Reminds us of ‘dropping grapes’

Well, Singaporeans have had our fair share of hailstorms. While rare, it is not entirely impossible to see “raining ice cubes” in tropical countries like ours.

Perhaps, you might be familiar with the hailstorm episode in Jun 2013.

Most Singaporeans will remember it by the iconic Drop Like Grapes remix, an anthem that is etched on our minds even till today.

Similarly, Singaporeans were bewildered by the raining ice cubes which remind them of grapes. A description of hail that will forever be inscribed in our Singlish dictionary.

We hope residents are safe

Hopefully, Malaysians residing in Ipoh managed to seek shelter from the storm yesterday.

As we stay home this ‘Circuit Breaker’, maybe its time to revisit this nostalgic Singapore remix.
