‘I’ve been waiting for this moment’: Fan sings with Jay Chou at S’pore concert after 15-year wait

Fan sings with Jay Chou at concert in Singapore

On Saturday (12 Oct), a fan fulfilled a lifelong dream after he was given an opportunity to sing with Taiwanese superstar Jay Chou during his concert at the National Stadium.

The show was the second of Chou’s three Carnival World Tour shows in Singapore held from 11 to 13 Oct.

The fan, local singer-actor Rao Zi Jie, shared the unforgettable experience on Instagram, recounting how he had long hoped for a chance to perform with his idol.

“Every single year before going to the concert, I would manifest (this), hoping that I’ll be able to sing a song with him,” Rao recounted in his Instagram post.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment ever since I was financially able to pay for my first ever concert by Jay Chou… back in 2010.”

In a video accompanying Rao’s post, Chou can be seen interacting with Rao and his partner, Phyllis Seah, by testing their knowledge of his songs.

After correctly identifying two song snippets played by the pianist, the couple earned an invitation from Chou himself to sing with him.

Chou asked Rao if he could sing well, to which the fan enthusiastically replied: “I’m very good at singing!”

Seah joined in, playfully dubbing him “Singapore’s Jay Chou”.

“How about this? Do you want to sing 擱淺 (Ge Qian — transliterated from Chinese — or Step Aside) with me?” Chou asked, sparking disbelief and excitement on Rao’s face.

Chou then promised an autograph if Rao “sings well”.

“If you don’t sing it well, I’ll sign for your girlfriend instead,” Chou joked.

Rao rose to the challenge, impressing both the audience and the star with his melodic voice. In the video, Chou nods in approval as Rao delivers his part of the song.

“You can do it,” Chou said.

When Chou began his verse, the camera panned to Rao who looked shocked that he is singing with the famous star himself.

Seah also had a chance to sing alongside Chou toward the end of the song, adding to the memorable moment.

As the performance concluded, Chou instructed Rao to pass along an item he wanted signed, fulfilling his earlier promise to the fan.

In his Instagram post, Rao expressed gratitude to his friends for capturing the “precious moment”, and gave a special thanks to friends and family who helped him secure his seat at the concert.

“Never did I know that Phyllis and I would actually get the opportunity to sing with him last night,” he wrote.

The post has since garnered more than 16,800 likes at the time of writing.

Many comments expressed happiness for Rao, with one user sharing she felt touched, as she can “can really tell how emotional you felt and how happy and in disbelief you are”.

According to The Straits Times, the song request segment has long been a highlight in Chou’s concerts, as fans get to sing along and interact with him.

This segment ran especially long on Oct 12, taking up 45 minutes of the show’s 165 minutes.
