There’s a page in the Singapore Book of Records and it belongs to 22-year-old diver Jonathan Chan.
On Sunday (8 Sep), the athlete clinched gold in the men’s 10m platform at the 2019 Asian Diving Cup, lifting him into the qualifying circles of the Olympics.

The 2020 Summer Olympics will be held in Tokyo from 24 Jul to 9 Aug. There will be a total of 8 diving events up for contest by 136 athletes. In the previous Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro, China took home 7 of the 8 gold medals in diving, while Great Britain snatched the last.
When the news broke, congratulatory messages poured in from Singaporeans, including Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin.
Another netizen used Jonathan as an example to prove that we can dream big and that the government should do its best to support young athletes.
If there’s one other thing most people would agree on, it is that as Jonathan dives for gold at the Olympics next year, he’ll also be diving into our hearts. In fact, with that boyish charm and a body more chiselled than the Stonehenge, he’s probably already won the gold medal in our hearts.
But more than that, he’s also extremely humble and positive — instead of only posting pictures of his best performances, he also posts pictures and videos of some blunders.
All the best to Jonathan at the Tokyo Olympics. So far, Singaporeans have won a total of 5 Olympic medals, with the most recent being Joseph Schooling‘s gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Hopefully, Jonathan will turn that 5 into 6.
