Kallang residents now have something new to boast about their neighbourhood — a clean and fresh landscape along the Kallang River.
The revamp of Kallang River had taken a total of 4 years and cost about $86 million. Our national water agency PUB had widened the canal by a maximum of 13 metres and deepened a section of it. All these increases the drainage capacity and works to prevent pesky floods.
Users of the park can also expect a cycling path running across the river by the end of this year. The bridge will form part of the cycling route that takes cyclists from Bishan to Downtown in the future.
Apart from the utility changes, Kallang River now also sports a spacious community deck where residents can gather and partake in activities or simply hang out with one another.
There are also little planter islands, water cascades and green slopes to spruce up the river.

In Mar 2019, LTA announced that 40km of cycling paths will be built in Woodlands, Toa Payoh, Choa Chu Kang, Geylang and Queenstown. These additions are part of Singapore’s effort to move towards a car-lite and more interconnected city.
That same month, NParks launched a 36km Coast-to-Coast Trail, which runs all the way from Jurong Lake to Coney Island — another step towards a more connected city where dwellers can easily move about either on foot or bicycles and scooters.
There is a shortage of people coming over to visit our country and having seen it, exclaim that it is one of the most gorgeous and kempt cities they have ever been to. But we should never rest on our laurels. PUB, NParks, LTA and all the other agencies truly deserve more credit than they are receiving, for continuously thinking of ways to improve our country and our daily living.
