Gone are the days when commercial aircraft sported simple and basic designs — these days, they can have anything from Pokémon to Moomin splashed all over them.
The latest icons to be featured as plane livery are none other than the members of K-pop supergroup Blackpink.
Earlier this month, Korean Air unveiled its Blackpink-themed Boeing 777-300ER to support the country’s bid to host the World Expo 2030 in Busan.
It recently landed at Changi Airport, allowing those in Singapore to catch a glimpse of the stylish jet.
On Tuesday (23 May), Changi Airport took to Facebook to announce the arrival of the Korean Air Blackpink plane.
The aircraft’s livery consists of the airline’s usual light blue and white colours, along with a special twist.
Right in the centre, Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa are looking fabulous and giving us their fiercest stares.
“Look up in the sky the next time you’re at Changi – you may just catch this special Blackpink plane!” said the airport.
We guess you could say that Blackpink is now in our air-ea.
Blackpink isn’t just present on the exterior of the aircraft.
Inside, passengers will get to watch a special inflight welcome video by the girls themselves.
In it, they thank travellers for choosing to fly with Korean Air, the official airline for the group’s Born Pink World Tour.
They also express that as “representatives of K-culture”, both Blackpink and Korean Air are “happy and honoured to introduce Korea and [their] culture to the world”.
Additionally, they revealed that Blackpink’s songs are available on the inflight entertainment system, so fans can get a fix of their favourite smash hits during the journey.
In a statement released on 3 May, Korean Air said that the Blackpink livery was unveiled to support South Korea’s successful bid to host the World Expo 2030 in Busan.
Other cities that have submitted their candidacy to organise the event are Italy’s Rome, Ukraine’s Odesa, and Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh.
The World Expo is “a global gathering of nations dedicated to finding solutions to pressing challenges of our time by offering a journey inside a universal theme through engaging and immersive activities”.
As a major event that welcomes numerous visitors, it can allow the country it’s held in to “build extraordinary pavilions and transform the host city for years to come”.
Walter Cho, chairman and CEO of Korean Air, said that the airline “is proud to play its role in the bid for the World Expo 2030”, which would “be a great opportunity to further advocate [their] nation’s presence on the global stage”.
Korean prime minister Han Duck-soo, who was also present at the event, added that the livery “is a testament to Korea’s vibrant and influential cultural scene that has captivated the world”.
The Blackpink plane made its first trip on 4 May, ferrying passengers from Seoul’s Incheon International Airport to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, France.
For fans of Blackpink, getting to take this plane will surely make jetting off to their next holiday even sweeter.
So the next time you take a Korean Air flight, remember to get a good look at the aircraft’s exterior and snap loads of pics from the boarding gate.
