A private hire vehicle (PHV) collided with a lane-splitting motorcyclist on the Tampines Expressway (TPE) on Wednesday morning (27 Aug), igniting debate among netizens over who was at fault.
The accident happened at about 7am on the TPE towards Changi, near the Pasir Ris Drive 8 exit.
Dashcam footage posted on the SGRV Facebook page shows several motorcycles lane-splitting between the first and second lanes.

A Mazda PHV in the rightmost lane then appeared to brake abruptly as traffic slowed ahead before suddenly swerving left.
It is unclear whether the driver intended to change lanes or was simply avoiding the vehicle ahead.
The sudden manoeuvre caused one of the riders to crash directly into the Mazda with a loud thud.

The impact threw the motorcyclist into the air before they landed hard on the road, spinning to a stop.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed to MS News that one person was taken to Changi General Hospital.
Police said the accident involved a 25-year-old female motorcyclist, adding that investigations are ongoing.
The video sparked mixed reactions online.
Some netizens pointed out that while lane-splitting is not illegal, it is “stupid” and puts riders’ lives at risk.

In 2024, Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam said banning the practice would “may not be practical” and would be “very difficult to enforce”.
Others argued that lane-splitting can actually be safer for motorcyclists, as staying within a lane increases the risk of being sandwiched between vehicles.

On the other hand, several commenters blamed the car driver for braking suddenly and swerving.
