Li Shengwu, the grandson of the late Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, has been awarded the prestigious Sloan Research Fellowship. His father, Lee Hsien Yang, shared a congratulatory post on Facebook in light of this achievement.
In his post, Mr Lee expressed his excitement for his son’s appointment,, and the fact that he “continues to bring honour to Singapore”.
Mr Lee added that he believes no other Singaporean prior to Shengwu has received the Sloan fellowship.
Since 1955, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has been awarding the Sloan Fellowship yearly to a select group of young talents.
The fellowship honours extraordinary researchers in the United States (US) and Canada whose creativity, innovation, and research accomplishments make them stand out as the next generation of leaders.
In his post, Mr Lee explained that the fellowship is one of the most prestigious awards available to young researchers.
It recognises and rewards those with potential to revolutionise their fields of study. Past Fellows have apparently proceeded to become “towering figures in science”.
In a statement released on Wednesday (15 Feb), the foundation explained that 56 Fellows have received a Nobel Prize in their respective fields, including the following:
The rest comprise winners since 2007.
Li Shengwu has been an Assistant Professor of Economics at Harvard University since 2018, according to a CV on his website. Previously, he was a junior fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows in 2016.
Mr Lee called it “a rare distinction” that recognises young scholars for their potential to advance academic wisdom. “I believe Shengwu was the first Singaporean inducted into the Harvard Society of Fellows,” he claimed.
MS News conveys our heartfelt congratulations to Li Shengwu for his achievement. We wish him all the best in his upcoming projects.
