Last Thursday (28 Dec), lightning struck near a Build-To-Order (BTO) construction site in Bartley, resulting in three workers requiring conveyance to the hospital.
While they avoided getting hit by the lightning directly, the workers reportedly felt dizzy afterwards.
The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) confirmed that investigations into the matter are ongoing. The workers were on the roof of a block when the incident occurred.
Speaking to The Straits Times (ST), the Housing and Development Board (HDB), who was alerted to the incident, confirmed that it occurred in the afternoon of 28 Dec at the Bartley Beacon BTO construction site.
Three workers were working on the roof of a block when it began raining. Following safety procedures, they started packing up and moving to a shelter. A bolt of lightning subsequently struck within their vicinity.
The workers then reported that they felt dizzy.
At the time of writing, HDB said that all the workers are “recovering well and expected to be discharged soon”. Alongside the contractor, the board will continue closely monitoring their condition and ensure their well-being.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) told Shin Min Daily News that it received a call for assistance on 28 Dec.
After arriving at the scene, SCDF personnel transported two workers to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and a third to Singapore General Hospital.
Responding to queries by the Chinese daily on the incident, MOM said it was investigating the incident.
On Friday (29 Dec), a worker at the construction site told reporters from Shin Min Daily News that lightning did strike the area on the afternoon of 28 Dec.
However, work resumed as per normal the morning after.
In addition, HDB inspected the construction site after the incident to ensure the buildings remained safe and intact.
