Yesterday (7 May), Loki the mongrel pet dog was allegedly put down by his owners as they were expecting a child.
Loki’s story gained the attention of many, who were saddened by his untimely death.
Member of Parliament (MP) Louis Ng, took to Facebook to voice his concerns, proposing a new set of rules before a dog is euthanised.
He plans to present his proposal in Parliament.
In 2013, Mr Ng sought justice for another pup, Tammy, who was unjustly euthanised like Loki.
We gather that must have been what pushed many to bring Loki’s passing to his attention.
It seems like Mr Ng was also roused by the incident, as he plans to raise the matter in Parliament.
Mr Ng announced that he would raise the matter in a Parliamentary setting, along with a proposal for new regulations to stop “convenience euthanasia” for good.
He suggests that to euthanise a healthy dog, owners must first show proof that they have attempted the following:
Vets will have to “wait a minimum of 7 full days” before they carry out the procedure. This is meant to give owners time to reconsider their decision, while animal activists can try re-homing the dog.
On top of that, he suggested that details about the animal could be uploaded to NParks’ or other relevant groups’ websites, where the public could access them.
The Parliamentary Question will soon be drafted, but Mr Ng is still open to suggestions from the public on the matter.
He also mentioned that the Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS) is investigating the issue, as netizens raised concerns about the ethics of the vet who conducted the procedure.
Mr Ng wrote that he would “do (his) best to speak up for the voiceless”, which in this case is innocent animals.
Euthanasia definitely shouldn’t be as easy as it is, and we commend him for continuing to better the situation.
We hope this signals the beginning of fairer euthanasia for animals.
