LTA impounds non-compliant active mobility devices in HDB common areas

LTA has impounded 30 non-compliant active mobility devices (AMDs) during a recent islandwide enforcement operation.

The operation targeted HDB estates and was part of the Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) crackdown efforts amid a rise in AMD fires.

In a Facebook post on Thursday (20 Nov), LTA revealed that it recently conducted a three-day islandwide enforcement operation in HDB estates.

Targeting non-compliant AMDs, enforcement officers impounded 30 non-compliant devices found in HDB estates.

The operation took place in common areas in HDB estates. Based on LTA’s footage, these include areas such as carparks, HDB corridors, and void decks.

The operation was part of LTA’s efforts to address the increasing number of fires involving non-compliant devices in residential areas.

AMD users reminded to avoid third-party & non-original batteries

LTA reminded the public to only purchase devices from reputable sources.

Additionally, AMD users are advised not to use third-party or non-original batteries and motor hubs.

When purchasing second-hand devices, users should also check for modifications and defects.

Non-compliant devices account for more than 70% of AMD-related fires

In a written parliamentary response in September, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs Mr K Shanmugam said that fire risks posed by AMDs remain a significant concern.

Over the last five years, 187 fires — or about 4% of fires in HDB estates — involved AMDs.

Of these AMD-related fires, half of them happened as the devices were charging.

“Although such fires form a small proportion of fires in HDB estates, AMD-related fires are typically more severe and more likely to result in fatalities and injuries,” said Mr Shanmugam.

He also expressed concerns over non-compliant AMDs, as they are responsible for 72% of AMD-related fires in HDB estates.

Thus, LTA conducts regular enforcement operations against non-compliant AMDs, and has detected more than 6,000 cases on public paths and roads between 2020 and 2024.

“We are considering tougher enforcement action to send a stronger deterrent signal that the use or sale of non-compliant AMDs poses significant safety risks,” Mr Shanmugam added.
