Just yesterday (9 Feb), we covered a Punggol HDB design with da pai (大牌) LEDs that makes it perfect for overnight CNY mahjong sessions with our kakis.
But if you need more inspiration for your own mahjong-themed abode, here’s another that will hopefully get your creative juices running.
On Tuesday (9 Feb), Singapore interior design company Studio CS shared pictures of a brightly-lit mahjong HDB filled with hilarious puns and furniture.
Modelled after a BTO flat layout in Bedok, the apartment also features a wall filled with winning combinations you can aspire towards during your game.
Animal and flower tiles can be especially difficult to find when players are in need of a tai, yet they are anything but so when it comes to this apartment.
Entering the flat, visitors will immediately notice drawers printed with portraits of the 4 animals and Season set of flowers, instantly giving you a man tai.
Just be sure not to look towards the direction when you’re attempting a ping hu (平胡).
The flat is also filled with punny decorations, each with a mahjong twist to them.
Here, the word nan (难), or ‘difficult’ is replaced with a similar-sounding nan (南) which refers to the Southern wind in a mahjong game.
The main draw of the apartment, however, is the area where the mahjong games take place.
Unlike the foldable chairs that we are accustomed to during our regular ‘dry swimming’ sessions, the apartment features throne-like seats, each carved with one of the 4 ‘winds’.
The wall overlooking the area is also fitted with man tai combinations that you should aspire towards during your games.
What’s more, the playing area is located next to the kitchen, giving hungry players easy access to snacks and drinks.
Players fatigued after a late mahjong session can spend the night in one of the sleek, minimalist bedrooms which will calm you down after an intense game.
The above HDB design is reportedly modelled after the Bedok South Horizon BTO flats which are due to complete later this year.
In response to MS News queries, Studio CS said it would cost roughly $40,000 for such a makeover.

Mahjong-inspired apartments seem to be particularly popular of late, perhaps due to CNY which is just around the corner.
We can’t wait to see what innovative designs local designers can come up with with the ancient Chinese game in mind.
Know a mahjong kaki whose life revolves around ‘dry swimming’ and would love nothing more than to live in such an apartment? Share this design with them in the comments!
