In the quest to make a better living, many Malaysians make the arduous journey south daily to work in Singapore.
A man from Johor Bahru (JB) named Affandi is one of them.
His night shift last Sunday (10 Nov) sadly took a heartbreaking turn as he was involved in a motorbike accident on the SLE. He is left critically injured.
Affandi is currently seeking treatment at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH). However, his medical bills are soaring with each passing day, adding to his family’s worries.
GIVE.asia took to Facebook on Monday (18 Nov), appealing for donations to help alleviate his medical expenses, which stand at S$41,000 at the time of writing.
According to the post, Affandi is the sole breadwinner for his family of 5.
To get to his workplace in Singapore, Affandi has no choice but to spend “long hours” travelling to and fro his home in JB.
On 10 Nov, Affandi was involved in a motorbike accident while riding home on the SLE and was “flung off” his motorcycle.
He was said to have suffered critical injuries and had to undergo immediate surgery.
Affandi is currently warded in the KTPH’s ICU unit where doctors have placed him in an induced coma to expedite the recovery process.
While Affandi is no doubt receiving the medical attention he requires, his medical bills are, unfortunately, skyrocketing by the day.
As of the time of this article, his medical bills have reached a whopping S$41,000 and his family is unable to afford the amount.
The astronomical bill stems from the fact that Affandi is a foreigner in Singapore and is not eligible for any medical subsidies.
Affandi’s family hopes to transfer him to a medical facility back in Malaysia to save costs but is unable to do so due to his critical condition.
Those who are interested in donating towards the cause may do so via the GIVE.asia website here. Any amount is welcomed.
The page aims to raise S$50,000 and has currently received over S$7,500 in kind.
Making daily trips across the Causeway is no easy feat, and to do it daily for the sake of one’s family is commendable indeed.
We hope enough money will be raised to help Affandi’s family cope with the mounting medical bills.
Most importantly, we wish Affandi a speedy recovery.
