On Saturday (27 July), a 31-year-old man sought medical attention at Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam, complaining of severe abdominal pain.
According to the patient, he had inserted a large eel into his anus earlier that day.
An X-ray revealed a long, bone-like structure, identified as the eel, extending across the patient’s abdomen from left to right.
Dr Le Nhat Huy, Deputy Director of the Colorectal Surgery and Perineum Center at Viet Duc Hospital, stated that the patient was initially prepared for an endoscopy to remove the eel.
However, during the procedure, the surgical team discovered a 4cm lemon lodged in the patient’s rectum, obstructing the pathway and making it impossible to proceed with the endoscopy.
As a result, the surgical team had to perform emergency surgery to remove both the lemon and the eel, which had caused a perforation in the patient’s colon.
During the procedure, the doctors made an incision in the patient’s abdomen and discovered a live eel approximately 65cm long and 10cm in circumference.
The eel had bitten through the patient’s rectum and colon in an attempt to escape.
Fortunately, the medical team successfully removed the eel and managed to push the lemon out through the anus.
After confirming that no other foreign objects were present, the doctors stitched up the patient’s punctured rectum and colon.
Due to the severe contamination of the rectum and the presence of faecal matter in the abdominal cavity, doctors also performed a colostomy to prevent faeces from passing through the newly stitched perforation.
Dr Huy mentioned that the hospital has done numerous surgeries to remove foreign objects from patients’ anuses, including essential oil bottles, glass cups, and sex toys.
However, this was the first time they encountered a case involving a live animal.
“Eels are animals that can survive in anaerobic conditions for a long time and can puncture the digestive tract. People should absolutely not insert animals through their anus to create a strong sensation, as the consequences can be severe,” Dr Huy warned.
