Man in India dies after sitting on firecracker box during betting challenge with friends

Man in India dies after his friend lit explosives while he sits on firecracker box

A prank in India went South after a 32-year-old man accepted his friends’ dare to sit on a box of firecrackers in exchange for an autorickshaw.

While he was seated, one of his friends ignited an explosive, causing the box to detonate and killing the man.

Footage of the incident was captured by a CCTV surveillance camera at the scene.

Man challenged to sit on box of firecrackers for autorickshaw

Last Thursday (31 Oct), Sabarish — a man from the Indian city of Bengaluru — accepted his friends’ challenge to sit on a box of firecrackers.

His friends promised an autorickshaw in return, reports Hindustan Times.

A minute-long footage circulating online shows Mr Sabarish surrounded by a group of friends while he sat on the firecrackers.

As one of his friends ignited the firecrackers moments later, the rest of the group scattered and left the man alone.

The box subsequently exploded, and the man fell to the ground. He attempted to get up but soon lay motionless on the ground amid the thick smoke.

The video showed his friends returning to check on him after the explosion.

Mr Sabarish reportedly died despite receiving treatment at a hospital, reports Times of India.

6 people arrested following man’s death

The police have arrested six individuals, aged between 18 and 22, in relation to the incident.

The six individuals were charged with culpable homicide.

The police revealed that Mr Sabarish consumed alcohol before taking part in the challenge.

Following the explosion, he reportedly sustained burn injuries to his buttocks, abdomen, and thighs before collapsing.

Victim’s mother wished he had stayed away for a few more days

Speaking to TOI, Mr Sibarish’s mother — Ms Vijaya — said one of Sabarish’s friends lied about the incident, claiming the victim lit the firecrackers himself.

It was only at his funeral that the family discovered it was one of Sabarish’s friends who ignited the explosives.

Ms Vijaya said her son, who had a disability in both hands, had left Bengaluru to work as a construction worker for about two weeks and returned home for Deepavali.

“I wish he had stayed away for a few more days. At least, he would have still been alive,” she remarked.
