During an apparent “targeted attack”, a man directed an improvised flamethrower at police officers in Pasir Ris Park and was shot.
The incident was related by the Singapore Police Force (SPF) in a Facebook post on Friday (8 Nov).
The police were alerted to an incident at about 6am that morning, it said.
A woman was reported to be sitting on the ledge at the top of a tower in Pasir Ris Park.
However, police officers didn’t see anyone at the tower when they arrived.
Instead, they saw a man in a nearby hut when they searched the area.
When they approached, the man “deployed an improvised device which ejected flames towards the officers”, SPF said.
The officers drew their weapons and told him to stop and drop the device, but “he refused to comply despite multiple warnings and continued to advance towards the officers with the improvised device”.
A 30-year-old police officer fired a shot at the man as there was “an imminent threat to the safety of the officers”, SPF said.
The man fell to the ground, suffering puncture wounds on his left forearm and abdomen.
According to a video SPF shared, he was also near a knife.
The man was arrested by the officers, who rendered first aid to him before the Singapore Civil Defence Force arrived.
He was then conveyed to the hospital in a conscious state and remains there under custody while undergoing treatment.
According to preliminary investigations, the man was believed to be the one who reported the “incident”, SPF said, adding:
He had allegedly called and gave false information to lure the officers to the location, with the intent to cause harm to them.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Justin Wong, Commander of Bedok Police Division, told the media that this appeared to be a “targeted attack against our police officers”.
The officers responded decisively according to the situation and their training, he said, adding that he was proud of their courage and resilience.
The man, who is aged 42, will be charged in court with attempted murder.
