On Thursday (14 Nov) morning, a man in Taiwan died after a loose truck tyre from the opposite lane crushed his car.
The accident occurred at 8am on Taiwan’s National Freeway 1 when a truck on the southbound lane suddenly lost one of its tyres.
Camcar footage showed the tyre blasting across the highway onto the northbound lane.
It then landed on a passing car, crushing the vehicle in the process.
A 52-year-old driver was trapped in the car until emergency personnel arrived to free him.
He was quickly conveyed to the hospital after rescuers failed to detect any sign of life.
Unfortunately, his injuries proved too severe and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
He had suffered from a tracheal rupture and multiple head and chest lacerations.
The loose tyre also caused a chain collision involving four vehicles.
Authorities subsequently cordoned off two of the lanes on the highway, causing a traffic jam that stretched over two kilometres.
A preliminary alcohol check showed that none of the drivers had any alcohol in their system.
Highway police are investigating the case to determine why the tyre had suddenly come loose.
Additionally, authorities are urging motorists to ensure that their vehicle parts are fully secured and functioning before driving.
Under Taiwanese laws, if a loose part falls off a vehicle on the road, the driver is subject to a fine of no more than NT$6,000 (~S$248).
If the loose part causes a critical injury or death, the driver’s license will be revoked.
