S’pore man who allegedly punched Holy Spirit Church priest faces 21 charges, accused of assaulting 11 others

Man who punched Holy Spirit Church priest faces 21 charges for incidents between April 2024 and July 2025

The Singaporean man accused of punching a priest at The Church of the Holy Spirit earlier this year is now facing a slew of other charges.

On 18 Aug, Huang Guang Zheng was handed 21 charges linked to violent incidents that took place between April 2024 and July 2025.

Allegedly assaulted 11 people across churches & public spaces

According to Channel News Asia (CNA), Huang is accused of “voluntarily hurting or using criminal force” on 11 other people in separate incidents.

Two of his charges are directly tied to the 9 Feb case involving Father Cary Chan at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Upper Thomson.

Besides allegedly punching the priest, Huang is said to have:

  • Slammed a wooden church door against a wall six times, damaging it.

  • Acted aggressively and knocked over a potted plant, leading to a public nuisance charge.

In Aug 2024, Huang allegedly assaulted three people at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Jurong East.

He also faces charges for:

  • Smashing a glass door by slamming it.

     
  • Shouting during service, causing annoyance to the congregation.

Alleged assaults at MRT stations & hawker centres

Huang is also linked to several attacks in public areas such as MRT stations and food centres.

Among the accusations:

  • Charging at a man at Maxwell MRT in January, causing him to fall.

  • Striking a woman on the head and shoulders with guiding sticks at the same station.

  • Bodyslamming a woman at Redhill MRT station in January, causing her to fall.

  • Spitting on a man at HarbourFront MRT in July.

  • Punching a person twice at Maxwell Food Centre.

  • Spitting on a cashier counter and toppling 19 coffee cups at Kopitiam Square in Sengkang.

Pleads not guilty, next hearing in Sept

For the charge of causing annoyance to the public, Huang can be jailed for up to three months, fined S$2,000, or both.

The charge of committing mischief has a jail term for up to two years, a fine, or both.

For voluntarily causing hurt, he can be jailed for up to three years, fined up to S$5,000, or both.

And for assault, he can face up to three months’ jail, be fined up to S$1,500, or both.

Huang pleaded not guilty on 18 Aug. His lawyer requested that the court take into account his mental capacity.

The case will be heard again on 29 Sept.
