Man rapes girl
On Tuesday (22 Apr), a Singaporean man has been sentenced to nine years and three weeks’ jail plus 12 strokes of the cane for raping a 13-year-old girl who stayed overnight at his house to avoid her mother’s scolding.
Mohammad Helmi Halim, 21, pleaded guilty to one count each of rape and theft, with three other charges taken into consideration, Channel NewsAsia (CNA) reported.
In June 2024, Mohammad Helmi and the victim met through a mutual friend and often hung out in a group, including the then-20-year-old’s girlfriend.
After one late-night hangout, the girl refused to go home fearing her mother’s anger for returning after 11pm.
Sensing her distress, Helmi’s then-girlfriend offered her a place to stay — leading the three to share a mattress, with the girlfriend sleeping in the middle.
Days later, Helmi and the victim hung out with friends again — this time, without his girlfriend. Once more, she stayed out late, unwilling to head home for fear of her mother’s scolding.
On the way to his house, Helmi asked her for sex, but she refused.
Later that night, as she slept beside him, he began sexually assaulting her, waking her in the process.
Terrified, the girl struggled and repeatedly said, “It is enough,” the court had heard.

Helmi, stronger and heavier, pinned her down and continued assaulting her.
Eventually, she gave up resisting, feeling trapped and helpless, with nowhere to escape. Shaken, she left the next morning.
During the time of his offence, Helmi was out on bail after being arrested for theft offences.

In Jan 2024, he had stolen from a petrol station on five occasions within the span of five days. The items include:
According to court documents, he had stolen a total of 15 items worth S$173.70 — no amount was returned.
For raping a minor under 14 years of age, Helmi could have been sentenced to up to 20 years in prison and up to 12 strokes of the cane.
