On Tuesday (29 Oct), a 67-year-old man stabbed his landlady to death after the latter asked the man to pay an extra NT$3,000 (S$124) for his monthly rent in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
According to ETtoday, the man surnamed Zhang and his disabled 19-year-old son began renting with the 75-year-old landlady surnamed Hong in July, agreeing on an NTD 6,000 (S$247) rent.
However, Ms Hong often quarrelled with Zhang about the noise the pair allegedly made. Things escalated to the point where the police were called to the scene on at least 10 occasions.
On top of the rent increase, the victim also allegedly demanded that they split utility and internet bills.
At around 7am on 29 Oct (Tuesday), Ms Hong confronted Zhang about the electricity bill, which infuriated the father.
“I don’t want to rent anymore,” he allegedly said, demanding that Ms Hong return his NT$15,000 (S$6,428) deposit and give additional compensation.
The woman refused and cursed at Zhang, which fueled their quarrel.
Zhang went to his room and returned with a 60-centimetre-long modified fish knife, which he used to stab Ms Hong’s head, neck, and back over 10 times.
After seeing Ms Hong’s body twitching on the ground, Zhang reportedly strangled her till she stopped breathing.
After committing the crime, Zhang took a shower and discarded his blood-stained clothes before riding a bicycle to the police station to surrender.
A forensic team was sent to collect evidence while Zhang made a statement at the police station.
After arresting and cuffing Zhang, he reportedly got excited and kept repeating, “I surrendered myself”.
If found guilty of murder, Zhang faces up to 10 years’ jail or the death penalty.
