A passer-by recently spotted a large school of fish dead in a canal in Marina South.
On Wednesday (4 Dec), Ms Megawati uploaded a video taken by her husband to Facebook, saying it was recorded at about 4.30pm on the same day.
Speaking to MS News, she said her husband initially noticed the smell of dead fish before he looked into the canal.
The video showed dozens of dead fish floating motionlessly in the canal waters. Some drifted by on currents.
“So many fish, all [died].” He said, adding that the fish were quite large in size.
The OP also spotted two black fish which he said were still swimming.
Moving along the canal, Ms Megawati’s husband filmed an even larger school of dead fish, estimating it to be “hundreds”.
“What happened to Singapore’s water?” He asked, wondering if it had to do with their deaths.
Ms Megawati said that they did not alert any authorities as they were just passing by.
Some netizens wondered if the canal water had been polluted or contaminated.
However, one commenter called such sightings “perfectly normal”.
They alleged that these were freshwater fish that had been ejected into the sea when the Marina Barrage dam opened due to high water levels from rainfall.
They died as they could not tolerate the saltwater in the sea.
MS News has reached out to NParks for comments on the incident.
