As Singapore continues to see more community cases, several markets and hawkers centres have had to suspend operations due to the emergence of large clusters.
On Monday (21 Sep), Marsiling-Yew Tee Town Council took to Facebook to announce the temporary closure of Marsiling Lane Hawker Centre and Wet Market to allow for deep cleaning.
This comes after an undisclosed number of Covid-19 cases were detected at the hawker centre cum market.
According to Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC MP Zaqy Mohamad, the hawker centre and wet market will be closed for 3 days from 21-24 Sep.
This will allow for deep cleaning and disinfection after an undisclosed number of Covid-19 cases were detected there.
To ensure the safety of all residents and stallholders, “necessary precautions” will be taken before they reopen on Saturday (25 Sep).
Meanwhile, residents can still buy food from nearby coffeeshops and eateries which are not affected by the closure.
Nevertheless, the Town Council hopes residents will be patient and understanding of the situation.
Mr Zaqy also told CNA that he and his team are looking at ways to help stallholders during this period of closure.
In particular, they’re working with the Town Council to possibly offer service and conservancy charges (S&CC) rebates for more than 7 days.
They will also work closely with the Merchant’s Association to check if any stallholders require additional support.
Though the closure of the market and hawker centre can be inconvenient for those staying nearby, we hope residents understand that this is ultimately done for their safety.
Ultimately, we’re grateful for the support and assistance provided by the Town Council to help affected stallholders through these trying times.
In the meantime, do observe good personal hygiene and see a doctor should any Covid-19 symptoms arise.
