Crazy Maserati Driver Gets $5,000 Fine For Dangerous Driving

In September, a social media storm erupted when a video of a Maserati in Lorong Chuan was released.

That video shows the car speeding through the estate and the driver acting really recklessly. Within hours, the video went viral and on Wednesday (12 Sep), police arrested the man, although his personal details were not released.

It was later revealed that Henry Yeung Wai Chung was a geography professor from NUS.

On Monday (26 Nov), Prof Yeung was given the maximum fine of $5,000 for dangerous driving. He has also been disqualified from driving all classes of vehicles for 13 months.

The judge didn’t give him a jail term, even though first-time offenders of dangerous driving can be jailed for up to a year.

Here’s a quick update on who the man behind the Maserati:

1. A geography teacher at NUS

Both AsiaOne and The Straits Times report that the Maserati driver is a geography professor at NUS. When asked about this, a university spokesman said,

As this is a traffic incident, it would be best to refer to the police for the details.

2. Reportedly from China

Not that it matters where he’s from, since there are idiotic drivers everywhere. But curious netizens have found out that the driver is from China. Outlets like The Online Citizen add that he is a professor from Guangzhou, in southern China.

3. High AF SES

Britney Spears said it best in 2013 when she sang,

You want a Maserati? You better work, b***h

A brand new Maserati in Singapore will set you back at least $400,000.

4. A really good professor

Road rage aside, the Maserati driver appears to be a really good professor. Zaobao reports that the professor won the National University Research Award for outstanding performance in February this year.

He was later appointed a Distinguished Professor of the university.

Based on that information, MS News did a little digging and found that the only Geography Professor to have received a University Research Award this year was Professor Henry Yeung.

And just like Zaobao reported, Prof Yeung completed his undergraduate studies at NUS and his postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom.
