As leisure spots like attractions and malls restrict visitor entry, many Singapore residents have naturally started reducing non-essential trips out. But for groups like migrant workers and domestic helpers who only get 1 or 2 days to wander around freely, the new measures may be tough.
To seek their understanding, officials from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) have been approaching them on weekends to advise on social distancing measures.
Responses seem to have been positive, judging from MOM’s Facebook post today (30 Mar).
Over the past 3 weekends, officials donning MOM vests have been interacting with Foreign Workers (FWs) and Foreign Domestic Workers (FDWs).
They distributed educational material in the workers’ respective languages to help them understand the situation better.
Instead of viewing it as a disruption, the workers were thankful for MOM’s concern and understood the reasons for their advice.
According to MOM,
[T]he vast majority of FWs and FDWs were cooperative as they understood the need for the precautions.
With Covid-19 cases still on the rise, social distancing has become the hot topic lately.
Aware that congregating with friends is a norm for migrant workers, MOM thus encourages employers to help educate them.
Staying home on a day off may not seem ideal to anyone, but it could be essential in preventing further infections within the country.
While MOM’s reminder is for FWs, FDWs and their employers, these measures ultimately apply to all of us.
Let’s do our part to protect everybody’s health and safety. Singapore may seem to have things under control, but cooperation from residents, who are the true frontliners in this battle, will make a world of a difference.
