A 33-year-old married woman in China has allegedly engaged in a torrid affair with a 24-year-old Shaolin monk, prompting subsequent scandal.
According to Oriental Daily News, the incident involved a monk from the Shaolin Temple, a famous martial arts institution in Henan Province.
Mr Yang told Oriental Daily News that his wife of 10 years, an employee of the state-owned Three Gorges Group in Hubei, had often expressed feelings of loneliness as he has to work long periods at another location.
The prolonged periods of separation has also caused their relationship to cool, he said, adding that his wife once lamented about her situation online.
According to Mr Yang, the situation escalated in August 2024 when his wife joined their two children at the Shaolin Temple’s seven-day martial arts experience programme.
After she returned, she apparently changed and asked for a divorce, he said.
When he investigated further, he found out that she had reportedly developed an attachment to the monk, who was the children’s coach during the programme. They would spend days in class with children and evenings in private together, Mr Yang claimed.
Following the end of the programme, the relationship apparently deepened, said Mr Yang, with the woman inviting the monk to Hubei’s Yichang City, where they spent several days together at a hotel.
Mr Yang said he also discovered that his wife had paid for the monk’s travel expenses and purchased contraceptives during their time together.
Oriental Daily News said Mr Yang initially attempted to reconcile with his wife for the sake of their family.
However, he eventually decided to publicise the affair and to separate, after discovering that she had left a family gathering to buy contraceptives for a later rendezvous with the monk.
The Shaolin Temple has since responded with a statement, confirming that the monk in question had been expelled from the temple.
The temple, a renowned institution with a history of over 1,500 years, stated that his actions violated the discipline and expectations for its monks, leading to his immediate dismissal.
It has also banned the monk from returning to the temple in the future.
In 2015, a well-known Shaolin abbot, Shi Yongxin, was investigated after an anonymous former monk accused him of embezzling money and having sexual relations with several women, fathering several children.
