Mother of victim in Bangkok bus fire seeks compassion after being asked for money following compensation

On 1 Oct, a school bus in Bangkok caught fire, tragically claiming 23 lives, including 20 students and three teachers.

On Monday (21 Oct), the mother of one of the victims sought compassion after being approached by several people in her village asking for money from the compensation she received following the tragedy, reports Thai news outlet MGR Online.

‘I didn’t win the lottery’

Sadly, the mother of a first-grade student who died in the tragedy shared on Facebook that after she received her compensation, many villagers came to her asking for loans.

“Dear respected villagers, I am the mother of one of the victims. I did not win the lottery, so please have some sympathy,” she wrote. “I don’t have money to lend you. If you hadn’t been in my position, you wouldn’t understand the overwhelming pain I feel. Please think about that.”

Following the post, many netizens flooded her post with messages of compassion and support.

One netizen criticised those requesting money for being insensitive.

One Facebook user noted that the money wouldn’t bring lost ones back to life, but it could support the families and help them rebuild their lives after the loss.

Translation: Compensation money may not bring anyone back to life, but it is meant for those who are still living. It’s for them to use in ways that help them heal, pursue something they want, recover emotionally, or even start planning a new chapter in life—whatever they choose to do with it, it’s up to them. Those asking tend to be family relatives.
