Mother-in-law scolds daughter-in-law for taking too long to give birth, says husband was ‘tired too’

As if being in labour was not painful enough, a poor daughter-in-law in Indonesia was berated by her mother-in-law for taking too long to give birth.

A video of the infuriating incident was shared on the Instagram page @makassar_iinfo on 1 Aug and has since gained 1.8 million views, with netizens criticising the mother-in-law.

It is believed to have occurred in Southeast Sulawesi, Tribun News reported.

Daughter-in-law told to give birth before dying

In the video, the daughter-in-law lay on a hospital bed while two midwives assisted her with childbirth.

Between heavy breaths, the daughter-in-law cried out, “I can’t do this anymore. I might die.”

One of the midwives encouraged her that she could do it, but instead of doing the same, her mother-in-law interjected with unsympathetic words.

“You think you’re the only one who’s tired?” the mother-in-law questioned, adding, “We are also tired from waiting for 3 days and 4 nights. Your husband is tired too!”

To make matters worse, she even told her daughter-in-law: “If you die, just die! But give birth to the child first!”

The midwife, who seemed fed up with the mother-in-law’s scolding, then told her off, saying, “Don’t be like that, ma’am. Give her encouragement.”

However, the mother-in-law continued to nag her struggling daughter-in-law, telling her to control her breathing.

Netizens furious at harsh mother-in-law

Netizens were enraged by the mother-in-law’s harshness, believing the daughter-in-law did not deserve to hear such words while in labour.

“The tiredness of the husband is not comparable to the mother’s life being at risk for giving birth,” one user remarked.

Many also questioned where the daughter-in-law’s husband was, saying he should have defended his wife and told his mother off.

While some commended the midwife for staying calm, others believed she should have been more strict and kicked out the mother-in-law from the delivery room.

Others also advised the daughter-in-law to go home to her parents’ house after giving birth, warning that she may fall into postpartum depression from dealing with such a mother-in-law.
