17-year-old motorcyclist allegedly chased by police before fatal crash

A 17-year-old teenager in Kampar, Perak, died after his motorcycle overturned while he was allegedly being pursued by police.

According to Bulletin TV, the incident occurred at around 10.08pm on 13 March along Jalan Pasar.

The victim, identified as Lew Rok Yew, is believed to have panicked during the pursuit, leading to the fatal crash.

Lost control after hitting speed bump

According to Kampar District Police Chief Supt Mohamad Nazri Daud, the teen was riding with four friends when they allegedly fled upon seeing a Motorcycle Patrol Unit.

Preliminary investigations found that the victim, from Mambang Diawan, had been riding his father’s motorcycle.

Police Chief Supt Mohamad Nazri said the victim reportedly rode against the traffic flow before hitting a speed bump near a pork market.

This caused him to lose control and crash into a metal railing by a drain, reports Malay Mail.

He suffered fatal head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

CCTV shows moment of crash

Kampar Member of Parliament Chong Zhemin later revealed that CCTV footage from his service centre captured part of the incident.

According to Mr Chong, the footage shows two motorcycles travelling at high speed.

 

The motorcycle at the rear was sounding its siren, suggesting that a traffic police officer may have been pursuing the youth.

Mr Chong said the footage showed both motorcycles failing to slow down when crossing a speed bump.

The youth’s motorcycle then appeared to lose balance before plunging into the roadside drain.

After the crash, documents belonging to the pursuing officer were also seen scattered on the ground.

It was reported that the youths fled the officers because they did not have valid licences and had modified their motorcycles.

Investigations ongoing

The case was initially classified as dangerous driving causing death, but further investigations are underway.

Mr Chong said the footage will be handed to authorities to ensure a transparent investigation into the incident.

He has also since instructed his assistant to lodge a police report.
