On Thursday (24 Oct), a motorcyclist collided hard into the back of an SUV on Kranji Expressway (KJE) after traffic came to a sudden stop.
A video of the accident posted on the SG Road Vigilante Facebook page showed that the motorcyclist’s riding gear had been knocked off on impact.
In a statement to MS News, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that one person was conveyed to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.
It was alerted to a road traffic accident along KJE before Old Choa Chu Kang exit at about 5.55pm.
Based on the footage, the motorcyclist can be seen approaching the back of the SUV at high speed prior to the collision.
Traffic in front of the SUV then appeared to come to a sudden stop, causing the driver to brake hard.
The SUV halted within seconds, and the motorcycle slammed into its rear without any visible braking.
What appeared to be the motorcyclist’s helmet and backpack was knocked off on impact.
The video then cut to another angle, showing how the traffic came to a halt.
Vehicles had been travelling at a regular speed, when the driver of a white Hyundai applied emergency brakes and stopped in the middle of the road.
Four vehicles behind the Hyundai including the dashcam vehicle and the SUV were forced to brake to avoid a chain collision.
It is unclear why the Hyundai had applied emergency brakes.
In response to the video, netizens criticised both the rider and Hyundai driver.
They questioned why the latter had come to such an abrupt stop, noting that they had given the cars behind little time to react.
Another criticised the motorcyclist for riding at such a high speed and lane-splitting despite the heavy traffic.
The police told MS News that a 27-year-old male motorcyclist was conveyed conscious to the hospital.
Meanwhile, a 46-year-old male car driver is assisting with investigations. Police investigations are ongoing.
