MPs To Wear Face Masks During Parliamentary Sessions, Exception Given When Making Speeches

Singapore MPs To Wear Face Masks During Parliamentary Sessions To Protect Themselves & Others From Covid-19

As the Covid-19 outbreak worsens, Singaporeans were required from mid-april to don masks when they leave home.

Our Members Of Parliament (MPs) are no exception. They too are now required to wear face masks in parliamentary sessions in light of Covid-19.

This is on top of existing measures like safe distancing arrangements, as reported by ChannelNews Asia previously.

MPs wear a face mask to work

Like the rest of us, our MPs have to wear a face mask wherever they go — even during parliamentary sessions.

The rule was emphasised by Speaker Of Parliament Mr Tan Chuan-Jin on Monday (4 May) at the start of the discussion, according to Yahoo! Singapore.

Of course, permission to remove the face mask is given to MPs who are delivering speeches at the podium.

Though so, the MPs are to strictly adhere to safe distancing rules within the chamber, as seen in their space-out seating arrangements.

Speaker himself dons grey reusable mask

To lead by example, Mr Tan is seen wearing a grey reusable cloth mask.

Fittingly, he jokes about looking like a Star Wars character in a Facebook post on Monday (4 May).

As they wait to enter the chamber in all-black outfits with face masks on, one can’t help but think of the sci-fi series – minus the Darth Vadar masks and epic theme song.

The mace held in front of Mr Tan even resembles a lightsaber, as he playfully points out.

MPs leading by example

As busy as they might be during this critical period, our MPs are not forgetting to don their face masks even while in combat.

Hence, there is no excuse for us not to do so. Remember to wear a face mask when you are out and abide by the 1-metre safe distancing rule.
