A peculiar sight appeared in the skies of Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand, on 21 Oct, when locals spotted what they described as a ‘mysterious pillar’ resembling the Giant Beanstalk from the famous fairy tale.
Shared by a Facebook page, the image quickly went viral, leaving netizens both baffled and amused as they scrambled for answers and speculated about the strange phenomenon.
The pillar, set against a backdrop of stunning iridescent clouds, had immediately caught the attention of many.
“The sky was very beautiful, but a pillar appeared when I took a photo,” the post said. It added that the pillar wasn’t visible to the naked eye, sparking a wave of curiosity.
The post has since garnered more than 2,000 likes, with netizens offering a range of lighthearted explanations.
Some joked that the pillar was the fabled Giant Beanstalk, while others suggested it could be the pillar supporting God’s Temple from Dragon Ball, the Bifrost from Norse mythology, or Wukong’s magical staff.
Amid the humour, others tried to offer more scientific possibilities.
One offered that it was probably caused by a large shadow cast by something on the ground.
A similar phenomenon occurred in June 2023, when Wat Phra That Doi Suthep appeared on the Chiang Mai sky.
One professor from Chulalongkorn University weighed in on the mystery, suggesting that it might be a distrail, a dissipation trail formed when an aircraft passes through clouds.
However, he admitted that such a phenomenon would typically be visible to the naked eye, leaving the true cause uncertain.
“I hope this wasn’t doctored or a result of a faulty camera,” the professor added.
Earlier this year, Japan saw a similar occurrence when mysterious pillars of light suddenly appeared in the sky. The pillars were formed from ice crystals refracting light.
