In recent days, many students from Nanyang Primary School have been experiencing fever, cough, and sore throat.

On Friday (27 Jan), the school sent a circular to some classes’ parents, notifying them of the spike in illnesses.
Because of this, some classes have been moved to home-based learning (HBL) for the next two days.
Nanyang Primary School emphasised that the safety of its students is of utmost importance. Hence, school authorities will commence cleaning and disinfecting common areas.
The Straits Times (ST) reports that the school had detected a spike in students having fever, cough, and sore throat for four days straight.
Through discussions, parents found that this affected students across different levels.
This week, the school “strongly encouraged” students to wear masks.
According to a circular seen by 8world News, school principal Madam Wong Li Peng said the encouragement was a precautionary measure.
She also revealed that none of the cases was related to Covid-19.
Nonetheless, ST reported that the school has stopped physical morning assemblies and reduced school activities.
Specific classes have also been moved to HBL for the time being.
Madam Wong also urged parents and students to be socially responsible in the circular issued to parents.
If feeling unwell, students should see a doctor and rest at home until the end of their medical leave.
8world News reported that the school would take the necessary preventive measures, such as cleaning and disinfecting classrooms and common areas to ensure their well-being.
Teachers will also remind students to practise good hygiene habits like washing their hands frequently and wiping surfaces.
Nanyang Primary School’s parent-teacher association shared with parents that the spate of illnesses is believed to have started last Thursday (26 Jan).
A parent with two children studying in the school told ST that in her elder daughter’s Primary 5 class, 10 out of 40 students had already fallen ill.
But she was glad that the school is monitoring the situation, adding that everyone was prepared for HBL should the numbers continue to climb.
