Motorcyclist’s neck slashed by kite string on M’sian highway, MP calls for immediate action

Motorcyclist sustains neck injury after being struck by kite string on highway in Malaysia

A Malaysian Member of Parliament (MP) has raised concerns about the dangers of kite-flying near highways after a motorcyclist suffered a neck injury when he was struck by a kite string while riding on the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) near Kepong Metropolitan Park in Kuala Lumpur (KL), Malaysia.

On Monday (21 July), Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng shared a video on Facebook showing the motorcyclist, who explained how his neck was injured by a kite string as he was riding.

“Flying kites so close to the highway — authorities must take action,” the motorcyclist said in the video.

Clothing shielded motorcyclist from worse injury

The video also shows kites soaring above the park, with one kite becoming entangled on a lamp post in the median strip of the road.

The motorcyclist then reveals a visible cut on his neck, underscoring the severity of the injury caused by the sharp kite string.

Fortunately, the man explained, the fabric of his jacket provided some protection between his neck and the string.

Without it, the consequences could have been far worse, with the string potentially wrapping tightly around his neck.

As shown in the footage, his jacket had been slashed open, exposing the inner padding.

The straps of his backpack were also severed, demonstrating just how dangerously sharp the kite string was.

Action requested to relocate kite-flying zones away from highways

“This is not the first time such an incident has occurred, and it is certainly not a trivial matter,” Mr Lim wrote in his Facebook post.

He stressed that flying kites near highways is an extremely dangerous and irresponsible act.

Mr Lim also confirmed that he has requested Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to immediately relocate kite-flying zones away from all major roads and highways.

“There can be no compromise when it comes to road safety. Lives are not something to be taken lightly!”
